Hennicke

About this collection

For over 45 years, Esther M. Hennicke supervised the second grade at Greenwood Training School on the campus of what was then Southwest Missouri State Teachers College.  When she retired in 1965, the college was named Southwest Missouri State College (now Missouri State University).  Ms. Hennicke was born April 17, 1897, in Boonville, MO.  She attended college at the University of Chicago and Columbia University in New York, and became a professor of education.  She taught at Boonville and Laredo before coming to Greenwood Training School, where her sister Dora also taught kindergarten from 1920 to 1958.  Ms. Esther Hennicke passed away on June 17, 1990.

The collection contains materials that document a portion of Ms. Hennicke’s time at Greenwood Training School, such as a scrapbook, photographs, and publications.  The scrapbook contains photographs and newspaper articles concerning Greenwood students.  Other materials include items from Hennicke’s travels, including costs for a trip to New Orleans, ticket stubs, and photographs.  One publication belonged to Dora Hennicke, and contains her handwritten notes.

A mimeographed booklet titled “Off to School,” which was apparently distributed to new Greenwood students, may be of particular interest to researchers.
